The 0 to 100 to 0 record

It is easy to start a heated discussion about which car is the world’s fastest.  Do you look at top speed, acceleration, 0 to 60 or something else ?  In the real world, I believe the best test of a car’s acceleration, grip, brakes and general tractability to be the 0 to 100 to 0 test.  Autocar have run this test for a number of years now and several web sites include figures for various standard production cars.  However, debates continue to rage on the Internet about the fastest 0 to 100 to 0 car.

Most people quote the Bugatti Veyron as the fastest road going car, in terms of both acceleration and top speed.  Ultima, however, quote the Ultima GTR 720 as the fastest 0 to 100 to 0 car.  The hard facts are below, with references.  I’ve also included figures for the GTR640 for comparison.

Ultima GTR 720          Bugatti Veyron            Ultima GTR 640

0 to 60                         2.6s                             2.8s                             2.8s

0 to 100                       5.3s                             5.5s                             5.9s

100 to 0                       3.6s                             4.2s                             3.6s

0 to 100 to 0                9.4s                             9.9s                           10.3s

Zero reaction               8.9s                             9.7s                             9.5s

The Bugatti Veyron figures are as declared by Autocar in an actual test.  These are verifiable on all main web sites.

Ultima’s figures were independently verified / ratified by Datron Technology and submitted to the Guinness Book of World Records.

The actual 0 to 100 to 0 runs show that the Ultima out accelerates the Veyron to both 60 and 100mph.  It also out decelerates the Veyron (not surprising as it weighs twice as much).

Overall, based on actual timed runs, the GTR 720 beats the Veyron by 0.5s.  It is currently the fastest car ever tested.  Allowing for a zero reaction time increases the gap further; the GTR 720 should, in theory at least, be able to clock a sub nine second 0 to 100 to 0 !

The figure of 10.3s for the GTR460 does not reflect its potential as the run was hampered by a poor surface.  Using the same braking system as the GTR720, its theoretical 0 to 100 to 0 is 0.2s less than the Veyron’s time.

Given the size of the Veyron, you have to admire its performance.  But for now the record belongs to only one car, the Ultima GTR !
